Veterans Disability Benefits in Ohio

The state of Ohio is home to over 700,000 brave military veterans. To show our gratitude and appreciation, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers a variety of important benefits to Ohio's veterans.

One important benefit is the Veterans Disability program. The VA provides monthly monetary compensation to eligible veterans who live with disabilities related to their time in military service.

How the VA Disability Program Works

To measure the severity of a disability, the VA implements a rating system. Each condition is assigned a percentage that ranges from 10% to 100%. A higher percentage indicates a more severe disability, and the veteran receives a larger monthly benefit.

Most veterans must participate in a Compensation & Pension (C&P) examination. The VA conducts this medical assessment to evaluate and rate the disability.

Eligibility Requirements for VA Disability Benefits

To be considered eligible for VA benefits, Ohio veterans must meet several conditions.

Both of these must be true:

  • You have an existing condition, either physical or mental, that impacts your health, and
  • Your service history includes active duty, active duty for training, or inactive duty training.

And, at least one of the following must be true:

  • You incurred an injury or sickness during your military service that can be connected to your current condition. This is known as an in-service disability claim.

    or
  • An existing injury or illness from before your military service worsened due to your service — called a pre-service disability claim, or
  • You have a disability that is associated with your active-duty service but it only manifested after your service ended. This is known as a post-service disability claim.

The key to a successful VA disability claim is presenting substantial medical evidence that shows a direct connection between your condition and your time in service. Maintaining a detailed medical history during your military service can significantly increase the likelihood of receiving benefits.

Processing times at the VA may vary, typically ranging between 3-6 months or longer. Make your claim has complete and accurate information to help the process go more smoothly.

If Your Claim Is Denied

If your VA disability claim is rejected, you have the right to dispute this decision. You can file an appeal by completing and submitting a Notice of Disagreement form. This must be completed within one year from the date you received the denial.

Make sure to include all relevant medical records, documents, and any buddy statements that can corroborate that your disability is associated with your military service. To win your appeal, you must convince the administrative law judge that you (A) have a disability; and (B) the disability is connected to your active military service.
